On March 15, people across the globe observed World Sleep Day and talked about important issues associated with sleep disorders such as insomnia, hypersomnia, and even somnambulism.
With spring just around the corner, longer days in the sun means just one thing to use – less sleep. Sleep deprivation is associated with a variety of medical issues, including psychological issues such as depression and anxiety.
Dr. Nancy Collop, the director of the Emory Sleep Center, stresses on the importance of getting adequate sleep and offers six tips on how to get quality sleep and improve your sleeping habits, which are as follows:
- Develop a relaxing bedtime routine and make sure to keep a consistent schedule – arise and go to bed around the same time every day.
- Stay away from electronics, including smart phones and computers, at least an hour before going to bed.
- Refrain from watching TV in your bedroom prior to retiring.
- Take a warm shower at least half an hour before going to bed for sound sleep.
- Exercise on a regular basis; however, make sure you do it an hour or two before bedtime.
- Abstain from alcohol and heavy meals before going to bed.
