On Sunday night, Simon Cowell gave an update on his health, revealing that he has been recuperating from the surgery to repair his broken back, which he picked up after an electric bike accident.
In a series of tweets on Twitter and Instagram, the 60-year-old shared “some good advice” on safely using an electric bicycle. He also thanked his medical team that took care of him.
Cowell’s spokesperson told Deadline, “He broke his back in a few places. They operated overnight, the surgery went well, and he is in the hospital recovering.”
The surgery lasted about five hours and Cowell “has had to have a number of fusions and metal rod put into his back,” according to sources quoted by PEOPLE.
Following the injury, Cowell is expected to skip the first two live shows of AGT this coming week.
Cowell was hospitalized on Saturday after he picked up a back injury following an accident with his electric bicycle.
Reps for the AGT judge first told PEOPLE that the accident happened Saturday afternoon as Cowell was testing the vehicle at his Malibu home with family.
The spokesperson said, “Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family. He hurt his back and was taken to the hospital. He’s doing fine, he’s under observation and is in the best possible hands.”
“Simon has broken his back and will undergo surgery this evening,” the spokesperson added.
Deadline reached out to NBC and Fremantle for comment on how the surgery would affect Cowell’s duties on AGT. The first AGT live show is scheduled for Tuesday.
In July, it was announced that Cowell will be taking full control of AGT and The X Factor producer Syco Entertainment. He agreed to buy out Sony Music Entertainment’s stake in the joint venture. The article appeared on Deadline.
