Serena Williams has withdrawn from the US Open due to torn hamstring.
The 39-year-old tennis champion took to social media to announce her withdrawal from the US Open, citing a hamstring injury.
The six-time US Open winner said in a statement on Instagram, “After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring.”
“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play – I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering on from afar,” Williams added. “Thank you for your continued love and support. I’ll see you soon.”
The US Open wished Williams a speedy recovery.
On Wednesday, US Open Tennis tweeted, “Serena Williams will miss the 2021 US Open due to injury. Get well soon, @serenawilliams!”
The tournament is set to begin in Flushing Meadows, New York, on August 30.
In June, Williams had to retire from her first-round match against Belarusian tennis star Aliaksandra Sasnovich after picking up a right leg injury in the first set.
She also opted out of the Olympics in Tokyo and the Cincinnati Masters Open last week. Williams is the latest big name to withdraw from the US Open after Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Dominic Thiem.
