Sarah Hyland says self-care has significantly improved her mental health.

In an interview with People published Wednesday, the 28-year-old American actress explained how self-care has helped and given her a sense of control over her mental health amid her health issues.

She said, “It really is this balance of mental, emotional and physical reality. So if you’re feeling mentally and emotionally drained, or if you are in a very dark space, you have to pull the string on the other side to life you up out of that.”

Hyland explained she used to exercise to improve her mood; however, she has not been able to do it frequently because of her health issues.

The Vampire Academy star said, “I haven’t really been able to work out the past four months. It’s just been putting me in a more anxiety-ridden place. You have all of these plans and something happens where you’re not able to do it.”

She has collaborated with Olay on their new “Skin Transformed” campaign. She has been using Olay’s skin care products as a form of self-care.

The Modern Family actress said, “To be able to take control of my body and use a product that makes me feel comfortable, because I’m not able to do what normally makes me feel comfortable, has been really amazing.”

On Wednesday, Hyland promoted the Olay campaign on her Instagram account. She wrote, “I can finally say that I am a part of the @olay #SkinTransformed campaign, which is all about celebrating the transformation of OUR own bodies, and how they are often works-in-progress..not perfection.” Sarah has undergone 16 surgeries and a couple of kidney transplants during her lifetime. In January, in an interview with The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she said she came very close to suicide due to her health issues.
