As some states across the United States are on the verge to reopen, most citizen fear that the coronavirus pandemic will get worse because of reopening, according to a CBS News survey conducted by YouGov.
And most American said the effort to tackle the ongoing outbreak is going badly.
The survey found that by about 2 to 1, American citizens worry the reopening is going to make things worse and at least 6 in 10 Americans said the reopening would help the economy recover, but by 3 to 1, they say it will recover slowly.
People thing the virus is having a disproportionate impact among minority communities. Negative assessments of the pandemic have come slightly off, though not dramatically. A majority of the citizens continue to say that efforts against the crisis are still going badly.
Most American think the nation’s top priority is to advise people to stay at home in order to stop the spread of the virus, instead of getting back to work and getting the economy going.
All Democrats and most independents think stay-at-home orders should be the priority, but most Republicans say the priority should be reopening the economy.
Many people think President Donald Trump has not handled the coronavirus outbreak well; their overall view was negative, with 45% saying he is doing good job, which has dropped to 43% in the last month as the death toll increased.
The poll found that Americans are a little more optimistic about the nation’s economy but most still stay it is bad. Overall views are largely negative among Republicans, Democrats, and independents. However, the views have slightly improved among Republicans and independents since May. This survey used a nationally representative sample of more than 2,000 American interviewed from May 29 to June 1. The sample was weighted based on age, gender, race and education.
