Beckett Cypher, the son of Melissa Etheridge, singer-songwriter, and her former partner Julie Cypher, has died from opioid addiction at the age of 21, according to the singer’s representative.
On Wednesday, Etheridge mourned her son in a Tweeter post.
She wrote, “Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction. My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends.”
“My heart is broken,” she added. “I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief.”
“We struggle with what else we could have done to save him and in the end we know he is out of the pain now,” she continued.
Melissa and Julie, who have been separated for many years, also share a daughter, Bailey, 23. Both Beckett and Bailey were conceived through artificial insemination and a sperm donation from singer David Crosby.
Etheridge has been performing daily musical performances from her home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Her website lists 57 days’ worth of concerts that have been broadcast nightly on Facebook Live.
However, in her Twitter post, Etheridge assured, “I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.”
Etheridge was married to Tammy Lynn Michaels from 2003 to 2010, with whom she has twins, Johnnie and Miller. Etheridge is now married to actress Linda Wallem since 2014.
