American-Haitian model and disabled rights activist, Mama Cax passed away after battling bone cancer at the age of 30.
On Friday, Cax’s family posted a message on her Instagram page confirming the news of her death.
The post read, “It is with deep regret and immense sadness that we announce the passing of Cacsmy Brutus (Mama Cax). Mama Cax spent the past week in the hospital, and unfortunately, on Monday, December 16, 2019, she left this world.”
With a heartfelt message about her loved one, the post continued, “To say that Cax was a fighter would be an understatement. As a cancer survivor, she had grown accustomed to taking on life’s several challenges head on and successfully. It is with the same grit (fervor) that she fought her last days on earth.”
“We are aware that this loss will be felt globally and will not be easy for anyone. We ask that you please respect Cax’s privacy in this difficult time. We will make information about funeral arrangements public once they are finalized,” the post concluded.
Cax was diagnosed with bone cancer (osteosarcoma) at the age of 14, resulting in the amputation of her right leg and pelvic bone. She was also diagnosed with lung cancer. The model then chose to open up about her condition and become a disabled rights activist.
In 2018, she told InStyle, “The only way to cope [was to] start living the life that would make me comfortable, that I always dreamt of. Not everyone comes in the same size or the same skin tone and we all deserve to be embraced for how we look.”
Rihanna posted a message about the Cax’s passing. She wrote, “A queen. A force. A powerhouse beauty that brought her strength to the @savagexfenty stage this year inspiring so many across the globe. Rest In Power sis.” Cax’s work to make fashion more comprehensive and adaptive space is her legacy, which will live on for years to come.
