Men who have erectile dysfunction (ED) often try just about anything to get back their lost erectile function.

Nowadays, there are plenty of potentially dangerous options men have been trying to overcome ED without actually seeing a doctor. Some men are even injecting Vaseline into the penile organ to attain and sustain an erection.

Healthline, a medical information website, says do not waste your time and put yourself at risk by using Vaseline instead of Viagra or any other FDA-approved oral drugs, such as Cialis or Levitra.

Alternatively, there are options like essential oils, topical gels, penile pumps, and vacuum devices for ED. “There has yet to be any evidence to suggest that applying Vaseline as a topical treatment to your penis will have any effect on sexual function,” Healthline says.

Citing the findings of numerous studies, the healthcare website says injecting Vaseline into your penile organ is a danger, “rather than a cure.” Such practice could lead to infections, serious skin or tissue injury, and other medical complications.

Healthline also referred to a small 2008 study conducted on 16 people who received Vaseline injections. The study found that the participants needed “urgent surgery” to prevent further penile injury.

It is important to understand that instead of trying any risky ED solution, consider FDA-approved medications or treatments that have been found safe and effective.

Viagra, which contains sildenafil citrate, is the best known ED drug, but there are other FDA-approved drugs, such as Cialis (tadalafil). Levitra (vardenafil), and Stendra (avanafil).

Other approved ED treatments include vacuum pumps, penile injections (such as papaverine, phentolamine, or alprostadil, and penile implants.

“ED can affect several aspects of your life, including self-esteem and relationships, so it’s not something to ignore — especially when viable treatments are available,” Healthline says.

“And rather than relying on unproven and potentially very harmful treatments on your own — such as injecting Vaseline or any foreign substance into your penis — address this common medical condition with your healthcare professional,” it adds.
