Hilary Duff has been diagnosed with COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated.
The 33-year-old actress shared the news Friday that she had contracted a breakthrough infection of the deadly coronavirus just days after production began for the upcoming How I Met Your Mother sequel series.
She wrote on Instagram Story, “That delta…she’s a little bitch,” adding that she had a “bad headache” and had lost her sense of taste and smell.
Duff also said she felt sinus pressure and “brain fog,” conducing the post, “Happy to be vaxxed.”
Breakthrough infections, which occur in people who have been fully vaccinated against the virus, are rare, but possible and expected because the vaccines are not 100% effective.
Vaccinated people who test positive are likely to be asymptomatic or have a far milder illness than unvaccinated. In the United States, nearly 99% of deaths from COVID-19 are in unvaccinated people.
Duff is not the first celebrity to experience a breakthrough case of COVID-19. On Thursday, Melissa Joan Hart, 45, revealed that she also had coronavirus after being fully vaccinated.
Hart told fans, “I am vaccinated and I got COVID, and it’s bad. It’s weighing on my chest. It’s hard to breathe. One of my kids, I think, has it so far. I’m praying that the other ones are okay.”
The actress explained that she and her family had taken precautions throughout the pandemic, but “got a little lazy” as restrictions were lifted, according to PEOPLE.
Hart said, “I think as a country we got a little lazy and I’m really mad that my kids didn’t have to wear a mask at school. I’m pretty sure where this came from. I’m just scared and sad, and disappointed in myself and some of our leaders. I just wish I’d done better, so I’m asking you guys to do better. Protect your families. Protect your kids.”
“It’s not over yet,” she added of the ongoing pandemic. “I hoped it was, but it’s not, so stay vigilant and stay safe.”
Earlier this month, Reba McEntire revealed that she and her boyfriend, Rex Linn, have tested positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated.
In early June, the number of U.S. COVID-19 cases had been on the decline, but as the delta variant became the dominant strain in the nations, cases once again soared back to levels not seen since February. As of Thursday, more than 51% of the American population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while over 60% received at least one dose, according to data from the CDC.
