UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt, 29, has revealed a few lingering symptoms that he has been experiencing from an earlier COVID-19 battle.
On Sunday, Garbrandt said that he tested positive for coronavirus in August, which is why he said he had to miss his fight at the UFC 255, according to MMA News.
The athlete wrote on Instagram, “Disclaimer from my last post, I was positive for COVID Aug. 29th,” according to MMA News and MMA Fighting.
“Since then I have been battling vertigo, tore my vein in my bicep which resulted in finding out I have blood clots, pneumonia, and mental fog, these are the symptoms I’ve had and been dealing with and this is the reason I pulled out of the fight,” he added. “I haven’t done any media, but I’d like to address it on my own terms.”
On Sunday, Garbrandt also reacted to the victory of flyweight fighter Deiveson Figueiredo over Alex Perez at the UFC 255. He tweeted, “That was a lamb being brought in to a slaughter to build up that Golem mfer and let me heal from covid. It’s just business.”
Garbrandt’s COVID-19 news came months after fellow UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov died from coronavirus complications, according to PEOPLE.
In July, Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, told ESPN that the Russian martial artist’s father died in Moscow after he was hospitalized in May. He was 57.
Abdelaziz told the sports channel, “We’ve lost our backbone. He was a father, coach, brother, an icon. Things will never be the same without him.”
In October, Khabib announced that he will not take part in the ring anymore due to his father’s tragic death. After defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, the 33-year-old told reporters, “Today, this was my last fight. Ain’t no way I’m going to come here without my father.”
