San Francisco Giant’s Drew Robinson, 28, has recently opened up about his failed suicide attempt.
In a recent ESPN E:60 feature by Jeff Passan, Robinson revealed the incident surrounding a failed suicide attempt at his home in April 2020.
He also opened up about his miraculous recovery and his plans moving forward, including making a comeback. He also expressed his intent to help those who are suffering from mental health issues.
Robinson told Passan, “I was supposed to go through that. I’m supposed to help people get through battles that don’t seem winnable. It was completely supposed to happen. There’s no other answer. It doesn’t make any sense. It was supposed to happen. … I shot myself, but I killed my ego.”
On April 16, 2020, Robinson, who was part of the Rangers organization from 2010 to 2018, survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head for 20 hours in his Las Vegas home before dialing 911 the next day, according to The Dallas Morning News.
After this failed attempt to take his own life, Robinson had decided he wanted to live.
A few months later, Robinson started speaking about his mental health issues, including a speech to his San Francisco Giants teammates on September 9 – the day before World Suicide Prevention Day.
Giants outfielder Alex Dickerson told ESPN, “I remember having this thought in my head: That is the toughest guy I’ve ever met. Not just physically but mentally and how brave he is to be doing what he’s doing.”
Robinson’s right eye was damaged due to the bullet. However, fortunately, the injury did not end his career.
He eventually resumed baseball workouts, with Giants re-signing him to a minor league contract. The news was published Tuesday on The Dallas Morning News.
