Best-known for playing Alex Dunphy in ABC’s comedy series Modern Family, Ariel Winter has recently revealed her “unexpected” weight loss.
The 21-year-old has been on the show since it began in 2009 and since then, it has been a roller coaster ride for her on- and off-screen.
Although she did not have the same health issues as her on-screen sister, Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland), she said that medications she used to take influenced her weight and mental health.
Winter discussed her current exercise regimen in order to get more core muscles, a big butt, and arms like Michelle Obama with Women’s Health. She also discussed how changing medications resulted in her unexpected weight loss.
“Years ago, it was hard because I’d go to the gym with my trainer and because of my antidepressant medications I never saw results,” said Winter. “I didn’t change my antidepressants because I wanted to lose weight, I’d just accepted it and it was fine. I got inspired to actually find a medication that helped me as a person and did all the things I wanted it to do.”
She explained that the medications she took switched her metabolism back, which led to weight loss that she was not looking for.
The actress said, “It came with medications and happened really quickly… When I changed meds, and started feeling better about myself mentally, losing weight was helpful because it made me feel like I wasn’t just stuck. I hate being stuck anywhere in life.”
She said she does not weigh herself anymore and has not been looking to shed any more pounds but she is aiming to gain muscle. “I’ve always had curves and I like having curves,” she said.
Explaining that she dislikes people who comment on her weight loss through social media, Winter said, “I think the one thing that bugs me the most is when people say ‘Oh thank god she lost weight, she used to be so fat.’”
This is not the first time she revealed something about her health. When she was 17, Winter revealed to Glamour that she underwent breast reduction surgery because she felt it developed overnight and did not want to be navigated as an over-sexualized teen. Nevertheless, Ariel Winter is now feeling much better after revealing her health and unexpected weight loss.
