In an article published in Mic, writer Joseph Lamour has demystified a few things about a curved penis.
Referring to a song of Megan Thee Stallion where she describes her appreciation for Captain Hook’s curved penis, Lamour decided to verify the facts whether or not a curved penis is normal.
Lamour found out that there are few reasons for a curved penis, mentioning what experts have to say about it.
Dr. Karyn Eilber of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says, “Penile curvature can be both congenital — as in from birth — and acquired, like from a disease or injury.”
“When it’s acquired,” she adds, “it’s often because of scar related to trauma like sexual activity, injection therapy for erectile dysfunction, or an autoimmune disease.”
Dr. Eilber adds that a curve may occur because of a scar, or plaque in the spongy tissue inside the penile organ that gets erect on sexual stimulation.
“Imagine you have a straight balloon that has one area that doesn’t stretch,” Dr. Eilber explains. “When the balloon is inflated, it would bend towards the side that has the non-stretchy area.”
About 5% of men have some degree of penile curvature. But does it really affect sexual intercourse?
Dr. Eilber explains, “The degree of curvature determines how intercourse is affected. A mild curvature may not have any impact,” adding men born with mild curvature may not realize they have a unique organ unless their partner tells them.
Some experts believe that a curved penis could reach the cervix more easily, resulting in a more pleasurable sexual experience. However, this is true for those who have mild curves, but anything beyond 30° could be painful.
Dr. Eilber says, “Regardless of whether it’s vaginal or anal intercourse if there is severe curvature, intercourse can be painful for both the man with the curvature and their partner.”
Some men with Peyronie’s disease have a severe degree of penile curvature. It is a disease characterized by the formation of penile fibrosis, a kind of scar tissue due to penile injury. Peyronie’s disease also leads to painful erections.
“Peyronie’s Disease results in painful curving, but not all [curved] penises are a form of Peyronie’s, Dr. Eilber explains. “There are some that men are born with a curve and this is called chordee,” which is quite rare.
She adds, “I am sure there are men who have mild curvature that increases pleasure for their partner or their partner doesn’t even notice, but those men aren’t the ones who seek medical attention. In general, the men who seek medical attention are usually bothered either with appearance, function, or pain.” The article originally appeared on Mic.
