Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers’ quarterback, is set to undergo surgery on the left foot injury, which eventually landed him on injured reserve, announced interim head coach Perry Fewell on Wednesday. Fewell said Newton is set to undergo the surgery next week.

In September, Newton aggravated his Lisfranc injury, which he picked up against the Patriots.

The 30-year-old visited foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in November, who said he would not have surgery at that time.

However, the decision to undergo surgery was first reported by NFL Network.

The Lisfranc foot injury has kept Newton out of action this year. Kyle Allen, who won his first four starts this season, replaced Newton.

Ron Rivera, former coach of Panthers, said, “If you have a settled quarterback situation, you’re pretty doggone good. Our problems didn’t start until when? Until our quarterback got hurt.”

“So at the end of the day, hopefully the young man is going to be healthy and it’ll be a good sign for this team,” he added.

Newton’s foot injury has raised many speculations about his future with Panthers, but Carolina’s owner David Tepper said no decision has been made so far and would not be made until Newton recovers.

Tepper also said that the new head coach of Panthers would have a say in Newton’s future. He said, “Hopefully, Cam’s healthy. I frankly don’t know, and neither does Cam right now.”

Last week, Newton indicated that he wanted to stay with the Panthers at his annual Thanksgiving Jam, during which he fed underprivileged children. He appreciated Tepper and his wife for attending the event. Newton said, “I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and I did my stint in so many different colleges, but Charlotte is home. Charlotte is a place I know people know me. They’re not just assuming, they know how I am. They know my energy. They know what I like and what I don’t like. For me to have that type of presence, it just reminds me that … it’s right.”
