Officials have reported that Saoirse Kennedy Hill, the granddaughter of the assassinated U.S. presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, died due to drug overdose.
On Friday, the Boston Globe and WCVB-TV reported that the Saoirse’s toxicology test confirmed that drugs such as methadone, fluoxetine, norfluoxetine, diazepam, nordiazepam and alcohol were found in her system.
Methadone is a narcotic drug used for opioid maintenance in people with chronic pain management. Fluoxetine and norfluoxetine are antidepressants, while diazepam and nordiazepam are prescribed to treat anxiety and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Saoirse was found dead at her home at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on August 1. She was declared dead at Cape Cod Hospital. At that time, the cause of her death was not publicly announced.
She was quite frank and open about her mental health struggles. She had also tried a suicide attempt while she was in high school.
Saoirse revealed her struggles with mental health in an op-ed for her high school publication. She wrote, “My depression took root in the beginning of my middle school years and will be with me for the rest of my life.” “Although I was mostly a happy child, I suffered bouts of deep sadness that felt like a heavy boulder on my chest,” she added. “These bouts would come and go, but they did not outwardly affect me until I was a new sophomore at Deerfield.”
