It seems like Viagra, the blockbuster erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, can make other things stand up, apart from the penile organ, such as flowers.
Since 1998, scientists have known that Viagra can extend the lifespan of cut flowers and this fun fact has recently surprised some TikTokers.
TikToker Angelika Koch (angelikaisanerd) posted a video in which she explains that just “1 mg of Viagra can make two vases full of flowers last a week longer than they would otherwise,” according to Insider.
In a video, she says, “Viagra makes flowers and men stand up straight,” adding, “not only does a bit of Viagra keep flowers erect for an extra week, but it also slows down the wilting process.”
Koch, who is also an author, shared a 1999 study, which was published in BMJ, where Australian and Israeli scientists stumbled across the discovery while looking for a way to extend the shelf life of produce and flowers according to Insider.
The researchers then patented a method involving nitric oxide a chemical that boosts overall blood circulation. Nitric oxide is much cheaper than Viagra. They also experimented with sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra.
Sildenafil is a PDE5-blocker, meaning it temporarily inhibits the secretion of an enzyme called PDE5. Eventually, this helps the body to stop the degradation of another chemical, helping the body to release nitric oxide during sexual stimulation. This way overall blood flow is enhanced, helping the penile organ to receive enough blood for an erection.
Similarly, just a small amount (1 mg) of Viagra was found to be effective in delaying the flowers from wilting. Typically, doctors advised Viagra 50 mg or 100 mg to men who suffer from ED.
This flower experiment worked because wilting and ED involve the same enzyme.
So the takeaway is a bit of Viagra could do the trick if you want to keep your Valentine’s Day roses fresh for a few days week. Men who want to use Viagra for their ED issue must seek medical advice beforehand.
