Nick McGlashan, ‘Deadliest Catch’ star, has passed away in Nashville, according to the Davidson County Medical Examiner who confirmed to CNN on Monday. He was 33.
“No cause of death or further information was given and his death is currently under investigation,” per CNN.
Discovery, the network home of the reality series Deadliest Catch, released a statement to CNN.
It tweeted, “Our deepest sympathy goes out to Nick’s loved ones during this difficult time. Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a sharp sense of humor even in the most difficult conditions. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.”
The reality show chronicles the lives of crews who work on fishing vessels in the Bering Sea.
McGlashan was born in Alaska to a veteran commercial fisherman. He began working on a boat when he was 13 years old.
His biography, which is available on the Discovery Go site, mentions that he was “a 7th generation fisherman who was raised not far from Dutch Harbor on the nearby island of Akutan, Alaska.”
McGlashan was part of the reality show since 2013. He worked as a deck boss on the series.
He had to struggle with substance abuse. In May, he even opened up about it in a Chosen Magazine article titled “The Deadliest Disease.”
He wrote that he was addicted to alcohol, heroin, and methamphetamine. He even went on to mention that he overdosed three times before undergoing treatment in September 2016.
In his biography, McGlashan wrote, “My life went from Bering Sea badass to full-blown junkie very rapidly. Hidden from me was that passion I had for life. Taken from me was my ability to live. I was at war with my addiction and it was winning.”
During season 13 of the Deadliest Catch, McGlashan took a break from the show to deal with his addiction. “McGlashan is one of several cast members who have died, including deckhand Mahlon Reyes, who reportedly died at the age of 38 in August after suffering a heart attack,” according to CNN.
